Jim Sutherland founded Studio Sutherland in 2014.
He has since rebranded the Arts Society, Natural History Museum, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis, Land Securities, Williams F1, Prostate Cancer UK, National Museums Scotland, Welsh National Opera, and University of Westminster. He has designed over 50 stamps to date for Royal Mail.
Studio Sutherland produce highly unique outcomes. I have chosen two of my favourite projects below:
Bikedot
Bikedot is a company that builds, sells and curates bikes, parts, and clothing. Sutherland got into the nitty gritty of a cyclist's world and used the tracks of the tyres to create dynamic brand patterns which are literally rolled out across digital and printed material.
"There's so much to love in this project: from the bold use of type to the playful photographic spreads to the typographic tyre marks." - Astrid Stavro
Typographic Circle - Circular 22
Circular, the magazine of the Typo Circle, was launched in 1993 as a platform to keep members up to date with news, information and events.
The 22nd issue was designed by Jim Suthrland with Domenic Lippa. Lippa and Sutherland overlayed images of the speakers' work to create layered collages, which were then overprinted again with fluorescent typographic monograms. This created a publication in which each page spread presented as a new artwork in itself, highlighting work from a sometimes legible, sometimes not-so-legible perspective. To provide consistency throughout, the two designers used only their two favourite typefaces - Akzidenz Grotesk and Baskerville.
Self-reflection
The work from Jim Sutherland and his studio, Sutherl& is extremely considered. There is a strong focus on typography and it is clear to see that their process involves a high level of experimentation with multi-media, not just digital applications. Studio Sutherl& was founded to be "agile and personal, building teams from the best artists, architects, writers, strategists, fashion designers and others to suit each project." They believe that there is great creative potential in collaboration. I seek to collaborate with others as much as I can in my own work, to enrich the creative process and to produce unique and multi-faceted outcomes.
