Jessica Walsh is an American designer, art director, illustrator and educator. Jessica Walsh is one of the most recognizable names in the design industry today. As the founder and creative director of the world-renowned &Walsh she runs one of the very few (0.1%*) creative agencies founded by a woman. Known for her concept-driven approach, she has made a significant impact on the current landscape of design and visual communication.

Walsh interned for Paula Scher before landing a job as an art director at Print magazine. "I started working there in 2008 when the economy crashed and the magazine’s budgets for illustration and photography were slashed. I’ve tried to approach constraints and hurdles as interesting obstacles. I taught myself photography and set design and started creating a lot of the cover and interior artwork for the magazine". This is where she developed her colourful handcraft set design style. Walsh joined Sagmeister Inc. in 2010 and became a partner two years later.

In 2019 Stefan Sagmeister left the practice and the rebranded studio became &Walsh in July 2019, with a client list that spans technology, fashion, retail and food. Her creative agency focuses on, among other things, helping brands “find their weird,” and oftentimes that requires what she calls “brand therapy.”

Those familiar with Walsh and her work know that she takes risks, and she believes that brands—big or small—should do the same. “Brands should not be afraid of being political,” says Walsh. “There have been many reports and studies … brands that have taken a visible stance with political and social changes have seen increases in sales and brand loyalty. Walsh is often policital in her personal work which is always thought provoking and affecting.

Self-reflection

I admire Walsh’s creativity and work ethic, but above all, her fearlessness in creating bold, vibrant brands with a clear sense of identity and values. Even if those values don’t align with everyone, they resonate powerfully with the right audience. In a sea of sameness, her work stands out for its confidence and bravery. That inspires me to make bold design decisions (when they’re right for the brand) that help it stand apart from the competition.
