Project 01
Exposing Unica
An ISTD brief
This type specimen is designed to expose Neue Haas Unica — a typeface that remained largely unseen after its original release for phototypesetting in 1980.
Revived in 2015 as a digitally optimised font, it’s now well-suited for both print and digital use. The specimen employs both digital and screen printing to highlight the typeface’s versatility, with screen printing serving as a nod to the phototypesetting process, where light exposure played a key role.
To honor it’s origins, the theme of photo-typesetting is thoughtfully woven throughout the content. An animated version of the type specimen captivates and engages the audience.
